ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A cancer awareness group is celebrating 20 years of community support.
Sting Cancer was started in 2004 by Nick Nesvacil of Green Bay.
“I’m a brain cancer survivor and I realized when I was at Preble that there were so many people who had a story about cancer and so I started Sting Cancer, started out just kind of as a small therapeutic group and I never thought it would blow up into what it has and it’s very proud,” Nesvacil said.
In 20 years, there are now more than 40 schools with Sting Cancer groups. It has also helped more than 12,000 people.
“It’s rewarding because I remember when I went through brain cancer, it was because of all the people around me, all the caregivers, family, friends, so it’s nice to give that back to people and hopefully help them a little bit.”
Nesvacil is reminding all of Wisconsin to wear something yellow on Friday in honor of Sting Cancer Day.
